Knysna is a lively waterside town on the edge of the Knysna lake which is fed from the ocean through a break between two cliffs called the Knysna Heads.

One part of Knysna is set on a hill overlooking the lake, whislt the waterfront section is set on an island within the lake. Spectacular beaches of Brenton and Plettenbergbay can be found from a ten to fourty minute drive away. The weather is mild all year round with temparatures reaching up to 30 degrees celcius on a good winter's day. Knysna is a tourist hotspot due to its central location on the garden route of the Eastern Cape and its rich cultural atmosphere as an artists' centre for skilled market stall artists.

The waterfront offers accomodation on marina cannals for residents, including mooring facilities for boats and yatches. The shopping complex adorned with awe inspiring African sculptures and fauna is set at the very edge of the island. Bars and restaurants offer views over the lake and pine forest. Pleasure boat trips to the Heads are available from this point.

The Outeniqua choo-choo steam train leaves from here at 2pm daily for trips accross the lake and through the dense pine and indigenous forsets to George. The oyster farm and pub is a great day out for a fresh culinary experience.

A five minute drive out of the bustle of town leads to outdoor African art markets which display valuable wood and stone sculptures at unbeatable prices straight from the creators of this beautiful work. Sizes range from sculptures that can fit in your hand bag to items that may require delivery by truck.

Local residents are privileged to live in tranquil surroundings surrounded by forests and water, whilst tourism offers good revenue all year round. Views offer a sense of space and peace that is hard to match, which could explain why it draws so many top artists from around the world.
